They are all phenomenal and don't let the Death & Darkness name fool you, the raw kits are perfect for any genre, although more so Death than Darkness as Darkness is more like Hansa in that it seems it has more tonality baked in which may or may not work in certain contexts. IMO it's enough to tell the general character of the expansion and if it will be suitable for you.įwiw I'm a rock guy and just got SD3 with Hansa, Fields of Rock and Death & Darkness. The sound. You can listen to raw demos of each kit on each SDX page on their site. There are audio examples and videos, but they of course pimp up I did not demo a plugin I was dissapointed. Generally I am interested in some expansion, but everytime Toontrack really could offer demos (a smaller, not full size). ![]() The 28" Slingerland kick is my favourite sampled kick ever. I like also the indiependent library, super cool sounds, maybe on the dark side and they need some Hi shelving, but cool too. With one mic those kicks sound better than other libraries with 4 mics on kick the snares are magical too, great by itself, crispy and bright with some bottom mic, no real need to EQ it. Sounds flat but warm, natural and smooth, and it takes any kind of processing extremely well, sounds good with no processing at all too. On the other hand the Al Schmitt for me is the best drum library ever. The samples are good, but the whole instrument doesn't sound like music. For some reason the midis played with it sound fake an odd. ![]() The stock library in SD3 sounds exceptionally good, forensic good. Load up the Iowa (Slipknot) preset and tell me that those hats don't sound completely out of place for that style of music.I agree. Not nearly enough to be as well-rounded as they claim to be. There's something about the samples that sound way faker than Avatar, not to mention I think there should be more way more hi-hat varieties. Yeah I think the stock Superior library is pretty bad, IMO.
